The window for lodging your 407 Training Visa has just become significantly more narrow. Starting March 11, 2026, the Department of Home Affairs is implementing a wait-and-see rule that could leave unprepared applicants without a valid visa. If you are planning to transition to a Training Visa, the old strategy of simultaneous lodgment may be officially over.

The Approval Gap
Under the new regulations, you can no longer lodge your visa application while your sponsorship or nomination is still pending. You must now wait for formal approval of both before you can even begin the visa lodgment process. This change is designed to ensure that the program supports genuine skills development and to prevent permanent temporariness. However, it creates a massive administrative gap for those with expiring visas.
The Bridging Visa Catch
This is the most dangerous part of the update: you will only be eligible for a Bridging Visa once you have lodged a valid Training Visa application. Because you cannot lodge a valid application until your sponsor is approved, you might find yourself in a situation where your current visa expires while you are still waiting for the sponsorship results. If that happens, you may have no legal way to remain in Australia during the waiting period.
Action Plan for March 2026
If you or your sponsor are preparing a 407 application, your timeline must shift immediately:
Sponsorship First: Ensure your employer lodges the temporary activities sponsorship well in advance of your current visa expiry.
Nomination Approval: You must have a confirmed nomination approval on hand before starting the visa form.
Status Check: If you are in Australia, you must ensure you hold a separate valid visa that covers the entire duration of the sponsorship and nomination processing times.
Any Training Visa application submitted after March 11 without these prior approvals will be deemed invalid, and your application charge will simply be refunded as you are asked to leave.

The 407 visa is no longer a "last-minute" option for those running out of time on other visas. Precision is now the only way forward.
